Slint Spiderland 1991 The first post-rock album ever. And one of the best ones, too. From the dark 'Nosferatu man' to 'Good Morning, Captain', maybe the best post-rock song ever. Download

Godspeed You! Black Emperor Slow Riot For New Zerø Kanada E.P 1999 Our second vinyl-only release from Godspeed contains two long songs, and sets the bar for the sprawling compositions that would characterize the group in the years to follow. Side one is cut at 45rpm and features “Moya”, a broiling cascade of upward scales that repeatedly explodes beyond its own threshold. “BBF3” on Side two clocks in at 18 minutes, and is the band’s most lyrical, multi-movement music to date — more elaborated melodic figures wind around an angry spoken-word field recording (infamously culminating in the recital of the speaker’s poem — verses lifted straight from Iron Maiden). Both songs were recorded with Dale Morningstar at the old Gas Station studio in Toronto. FLAC

Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven 2000 After two tireless years of touring and near-unanimous critical acclaim, Godspeed You Black Emperor! assembled a collection of new recordings that chart the creative evolution of the band as well as its literal physical movement on the road, criss-crossing North America and Europe. Five expansive full-band compositions are framed by various field recordings, tape manipulations and ensemble pieces in a return to the narrative sonic collage techniques that marked their 1997 debut (cst003). Four seamless sides of vinyl unfold a world of aching sadness and beauty, with musical quotes ranging from heartland americana to mitteleuropa folkways, all distilled through the unique sonic filters of Godspeed’s pedal-crazy orchestral rock instrumentation. Harrowing guitars, plaintive strings, pulsing basses and explosive drums combine with glockenspiels, horns and tape drones to form an overwhelming palette of sounds, always driven by fierce melodic momentum and intense emotional resonance. GYBE! continues to paint on an impossibly large canvas, with an uncanny blend of world-weariness and naive exuberance that speaks volumes about the conflicts and contradictions permeating our political and cultural life. The tension between humility and hubris conjures an epic scope and a raw hope that such sweeping gestures might survive with some semblance of substance. If this record can create a clearing for itself, and breathe with a degree of the life that went into its making, Godspeed may yet topple a building or two. Download

A Silver Mt. Zion He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts Of Light Sometimes Grace The Corner Of Our Rooms… 2000 A Silver Mt. Zion was formed by Efrim, Thierry and Sophie (all of GY!BE) at the beginning of 1999, and after a debut performance at Constellation’s Musique Fragile concert series, the trio recorded this sublime debut record on 8-track at the Hotel2Tango in November of that year. Starting with simple, stirring piano themes written by Efrim, the music swirls and sways with multiple violin tracks from Sophie and plucked contrebasse from Thierry (his first recording on upright acoustic bass). What initially began as a single long, sparse chamber piece evolved into more fully-orchestrated movements, interspersed with tapes, drones and loops, along with some vocals. Guest musicians include Aidan (GY!BE, Exhaust, 1-Speed Bike) beating skins on “Sit In The Middle Of Three Galloping Dogs”, and Gordon Krieger (Exhaust) and Sam Shalabi (The Shalabli Effect, solo) improvising on clarinet and electric guitar respectively on “Blown-Out Joy From Heaven’s Mercied Hole”. Additional taped fragments are from Efrim’s archives, with contributions from Aidan. The resulting series of plaintive ensemble pieces shivers with intimate sadness. He Has Left Us Alone… is by far our most requested record for student film projects. Dedicated to Efrim’s dog Wanda. MP3 V0

Sigur Rós

Takk... 2005 One of the last releases by Sigur before they began to move away from their original sound. Expect dreamy soundscapes and twinkly sounds that slowly build and swell into epic territory. What sets Sigur apart from most other post-rock groups is the addition of their own unique psuedo-language, "Hopelandic". While some listeners are put off by the seemingly high-pitched gibberish, after a few listens it begins to click with the music. Download - MP3 V2

Mono You Are There 2006 Another really epic album from Mono. Download

Yndi Halda Enjoy Eternal Bliss 2007 Yndi Halda's self titled (Yndi Halda is itself Old Norse for "Enjoy Eternal Bliss") debut roughly follows the post-rock schematic laid before them by previous bands; however, Yndi deviates from the norm by placing heavier focus on the orchestral components of post-rock. Powerful, swelling violins accompany the pounding drums and airy, tremolo-picked guitars. Expect classic post-rock elements (i.e., quiet-loud-quiet), but with a few interesting twists. Download

Bark Psychosis Hex 1994

The term 'post-rock' apparently originated in a review of this album.

It is also very good.

65* Days of Static The Fall of Math 2004 The first album in the brilliant trilogy of post rock by 65DOS. Pretty much the purest post rock you can possibly find. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e1/65dos_the_fall_of_math.jpg/200px-65dos_the_fall_of_math.jpg
65* Days of Static One Time For All Time 2005 The second album in the brilliant trilogy of post rock by 65DOS. They kept the same mood as the previous album, this time refined and retuned. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b1/65dos_one_time_for_all_time.jpg/200px-65dos_one_time_for_all_time.jpg
65* Days of Static The Destruction of Small Ideas 2007 The last but not least album from 65DOS. It's the band's magnus opus, being the most complex, refined and catchy album of all. They kept the same mood, now with references to other bands of the genre, but always keeping the fresh, young sensation of the previous albuns. S'good stuff. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b8/65dos_the_destruction_of_small_ideas.jpg/200px-65dos_the_destruction_of_small_ideas.jpg
And So I Watch You From Afar And So I Watch You From Afar 2009

A great debut album from ASIWYFA. This band is aggressive, loud, fast, and in your face. This is revival of Post-Rock, and a great double disc. This band will be huge in the future.
